Excellent post. When it comes to art, the entire expression of the work matters. When publications use AI-generated imagery, they are devaluing the writing that they are illustrating. All writers should avoid such publications, and stick to ones that use human-made art. The only way to fight AI is to join together against it, and crush those who would use AI to make a quick buck or make things easier for themselves at the expense of other human beings.

Great post. I was going to apply to a publishing house / mag a few weeks ago. But on their website, I clicked on AI Policy and they are transparent but they state they use AI artwork. I decided not to apply because I can’t support that, even if it was an opportunity to break into the work I want. You’re right, as writers, we must support other creatives. 🫶

Thanks for the comment V. It's hard to turn down an opportunity like this, but I think you did the right thing. Conforming is the worst thing artists can do right now. I hope that very soon another opportunity (a better one) will come your way. And please, feel free to leave a comment with any information that may help others get to know and support your creative work.

Thank you for your thoughtful reply, Lis! I completely agree about conformity. See, I was also recently laid off from my job, so I need a job pretty badly. But I am not willing to compromise my principles. As creatives, we have to stand strong, even when it's hard!

For anyone who is interested, I'm an indie author and poet. I have a collection out, I post frequently on Substack, where I'm building a community with other poets and poetry lovers.

I also offer author services (editing, quote pulling, poetry story arc mapping & feedback) to fiction writers and poets. I offer flexible payments and custom quotes to fit into your budget, as well as free sample services with no obligation. All services come with a contract to protect your investment.

Here's my link with all my details: https://linktr.ee/vwalkerauthor

Thank you!!

I have two active Substack sites, both concerned with Poetry. Sixty Odd Poets features a selection of poets. I use a photo filter type app to generate an inked style illustration of each poet who I feature. It isn’t advertised as AI, but it must somehow analyse the photos and recreate them using some sort of algorithm. The second site - Sixty Odd Poems features my own writing and poetry. I like to illustrate each article and sometimes use AI to generate the images. I am increasingly concerned by this and do try to use less images made this way. If anyone would like to create an alternative image for anything that I could use for free, I would be happy to name check and link to their site etc.

Also. If anyone would like to submit their poetry to the site, having read what I have put above. I would be happy to read and consider it.

I would also conisder just using conventional filters and other photo apps like the Gimp on photos you take with your phone. You could take photos and apply some fun filters there – no AI needed. On top of that, even if you don't get the same precision that you do with AI prompts, it will appear more genuine because at least you made it!

Thanks for that advice Jason. I do more of that sort of thing these days. To be honest using AI can be very time consuming - it takes a lot of prompts and then some editing to get the image that J want.
